what is VastuShastra?

In a nutshell, Vastusastra is an Indic theory of architecture and a ‘science of higher dimension.’ Mayamatam, a treatise on dwelling, put it a succinct manner, “Vastusastra is an ancient art and science, containing principles and practices of designing and constructing buildings which ensure a harmonious balance between man, material and nature”. In other words, Vastu Shastra is an inquisitive science of architecture which capsulizes the forces which act upon a given space through the current of positive energy. Putting it differently, Vastu pertains to ‘abode’ or mansion and Shastra or Vidya means science or knowledge. Accordingly, Vastu Vidya is the sacred holistic science pertaining to designing and building of domiciles. The foundational precepts of vastu have been derived from Sthapathya Veda. Sthapatya Veda is the Science of Establishing.  It has been argued that Sthapathya Veda is the most ancient and rigorous system of architecture and city planning. The legendary Kautilya highlights Vastu as “griham kṣetram ārāma setu-banḍha, taṭākam adhāro vāvāstuh.” It entails that house, fields, gardens, the building of any kind, lakes and tanks are called Vastu.
Vastu literally means “Dwelling Place.” Vastushastra is based on various natural energies and the cardinal objective is to strike a harmony a between the fine elements. It has been demonstrated that Vastusastra is an ancient science for designing and building.  Vastusastra amalgamates science, art, philosophy and easthetic. Vastu can be employed for micro as well as for macro level.
